Leslie Moore

Northern Saw-Whet Owl
linocut

Leslie Moore makes linocut relief prints alongside pursuits as a pen-and-ink artist and a poet. She lives and works in Belfast, ME, having followed a career teaching English in numerous places around the world. During college she spent a summer in Perugia, Italy studying print-making and figure drawing at the Accademie di Belle Arti Pietro Vannucci. A seed was planted. Since then, she has taken workshops in drawing and printmaking at institutions around New England: the Worcester Art Museum, Zea Mays Printmaking, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and Waterfall Arts. She is a member of the Winterberry Collective, a group of linoleum block printmakers who work together with Holly Berry at her studio in Waldoboro, Maine.

Leslie has shown her prints and drawings in solo and group shows up and down the coast of Maine. She has illustrated four books, including All My Dogs by Bill Henderson, founder of the Pushcart Press. Her art has been featured on book covers and in literary journals and newsletters. She has also published her poetry, often her prints inspire poems or her poems inspire prints. She is currently working on a book of animal poems, prints, and pen-and-ink drawings.

Leslie relishes the interactions between printmaking, drawing, and writing. “Making a relief print is just the opposite of making a pen-and-ink drawing,” she says. “In print making, I carve out what I don’t want in the final image; in drawing, I ink in what I do want. I love the mental gymnastics this reversal sets off in my brain. When the mark making gets too intense, I write.”
