Jay Stormer

Northern Gannet
relief engraving

Jay Stormer studied printmaking at Dartmouth College with Professor Ray Nash nearly 60 years ago. Now retired from a career as a university professor in earth science, Jay has kept his art as a serious avocation for decades. Now living and working in Brunswick, ME, he works his print workshop under the name of Redstart Press. His primary focus has been woodcuts and wood engravings but he has also made etchings and collographs.

A relationship with our natural world, particularly through an interest in birding, is the special interest that inspires many of Jay’s prints. Personal photographs are often used as reference for his prints. Recent exhibitions include a solo show, “Birds of Maine”, at the Maine Audubon Visitors Center in Falmouth, ME. Several of his prints have been accepted in the International Mini Print Cantabria II (2019) & III (2020) exhibitions at the Faro Cabo Mayor Art Center, in Santander, Spain. Three of Jay’s woodcuts were recently accepted for the National Small Prints Show (2021).
